There are photographers. And, then there are photo-artists. The qualitative difference, between the aforementioned, being that the photographer captures a moment in time, whereas, the photo-artist captures a moment in time as well as the subject's essence.
There are many skilled photographers. Individuals that have invested an inordinate amount of time and energy in learning how to master the technical knowledge and processes that are prerequisite to producing an excellent end result. In contrast, there are relatively few photo-artists. Why, Because the photo-artist possesses, not only all of the essential professional knowledge of the photographer, but also an inherent skill that can't be taught - that being, the intuitive instinct of knowing exactly which technique, in combination with which moment, will best serve to capture the soul, energy and emotions of the subject being photographed. Photographers reproduce a static frozen likeness. Photo-artists render the reproduction of that same moment in time; however, they also incorporate the elements of vision. The photo-artist's sensitivity, to the nuances of a moment, results not in a mere reproduction. Rather, the end result is a work of visual reproduction that tells a story, implies a future and takes on a life of its own. It is this unteachable qualitative instinct (i.e., visionary foresight), that separates the photographer from the photo-artist.
Kevin McDonald is the quintessential photo-artist. Kevin's thirty years of experience as a photographer have equipped him with an exceptional level of competence, with regard to photographic techniques and processes, however, it is the inherent instincts of the artist that has resulted in Kevin's reputation as being "one of the best."
With his thirty years of photography in the field of advertising, public relations and marketing. A decade of experience in the fashion & glamour industry alone (shooting covers for the likes of Pierre Cardin, Jordache, Linea Pitti and Starter, NBA, NFL AND NHL just to name a few), Kevin has amassed a repertoire of Cover Shots that are the envy of his peer group. Yet, as Kevin explains, " I approach every picture that I take as being a Cover Shot."
For the past seven years, Kevin has combined his talent as a photo-artist with his passion for horses. Always an avid horse rider, he is also a horse owner. Kevin's love, for all things equestrian, in combination with his extraordinary skills as a photographer as well as his innate artistic instincts have resulted in some of the most breath-taking, beautiful and unique equestrian photos that have ever been captured via the eye of the camera.
